During my undergraduate, I completed a student teaching experience in a 2nd grade classroom. On my last day, several of the students gave me going away presents. I don’t remember what all of the gifts were – it was almost 20 years ago! However, there was one gift that I will never forget. That gift was a journal.

Little did I know all those years ago how that one little journal would change my life and set the course for a bunch of success. Regardless of your age or where you are in life, if YOU are looking for a way to achieve motivation and goal setting, a goal journal is a perfect place to start.

How the Journal Changed Everything
Up until that point in my life when I received the motivation and goal setting journal, I had never had a proper journal. Sure, I had goals. Those lived in my head. Why did I need a journal?
P.S. I STILL have the journal that I received in November of 2003. I still remember the name of the kid who gave it to me. THAT right there shows you the impact the journal made on my life.
Here’s why you need a MOtivation and goal setting journal:
- Writing down your goals on paper helps you to achieve them. They feel more real. You can’t forget about the goal you set because it’s right there on the paper. Studies have shown that people who write down their goals daily are 42% more likely to achieve them.
- Writing down your goals helps you to get clear on exactly what you want. Be specific on what you want. Visualize it in your mind. Do you want a house? What does it look like? What is the architectural style? Where is it located? What does the landscaping look like? How about the flooring? What kind of kitchen table do you have? Be specific in your journal. Write down all the details. See it in your mind. Also, write down a date by which you will achieve the goal. For example, I will have my dream home no later than March 1, 2025. The home will be located _____ and the style of the home will be _____…
- Writing down your goals will help you to measure your success. This will excite you and make you feel proud. Every 4-6 months, revisit your goals list. Cross off the ones you’ve already achieved. Write the date that you achieved them. Add new goals. Over time, you will be amazed at the goals you’ve completed.

- Marrying my best friend – We are coming up on our 15 year anniversary in October 2021!
- Buying a house
- Paying off all of my student loans
- Paying off all of my husband’s student loans
- Paying off my car
- Paying off my husband’s car
- Purchasing a house
- Getting my first dog (Murphy just passed away. He lived 13 wonderful years.)
- Going to Europe – Germany and Austria
- Going to Europe again for the second time – England and Scotland
- Getting a bachelor’s degree
- Getting a master’s degree
- Getting my dream job of working in a library
- Getting promoted to management in a library
- Starting a business with my husband
- Achieving a more peaceful and calm demeanor
- Mastering typing without looking at the keyboard
- Tripling my personal income since starting working
- Starting a blog to express my thoughts and ideas
- Losing 30 pounds
- Reducing my blood pressure, cholesterol, A1C – getting healthier overall
- Decluttering my home
- Reading over 700 books
- Trying a vegan diet for a month
- Trying a vegetarian diet for a month
- Learning how to achieve and maintain a healthy work-life balance
- Being a role model to others
- Rescuing a truly homeless dog and giving her an amazing life
- Developing an “exceptional” credit score
- Being debt free except for our home
- Developing a green thumb
- Writing a children’s book – still need to get it published!
- Overcoming anxiety and panic attacks
- Attending counseling when I needed it
- Learning to say “I’m sorry”
- Learning how to be more empathetic
- Learning how to be more vulnerable
- Learning how to meditate and become more mindful
- Learning that something good always comes from the hard times
- Learning how to paint walls well
- Learning how to install a luxury vinyl floor and did it by myself!
- Learning how to install a fence and did it myself!
- Learning how to raise chicks and care for chickens
I’d say that is a pretty good list!
